3. Using AI for Content Creation
This is the reference section for AI in content marketing. Other modules reference this section for AI fundamentals.
What is Generative AI?
Generative AI creates content (text, images, videos, audio) and can provide insights and personalise experiences. You interact via prompts, voice, or images.
AI Tools for Content Marketing
| Category | Tools | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Text generation | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot | Drafts, brainstorming, editing, repurposing |
| Image generation | Midjourney, DALL-E, Adobe Firefly, Canva AI | Social graphics, product mockups, illustrations |
| Video generation | Runway, Synthesia, CapCut AI, Descript | Short clips, explainers, video editing |
| Audio / voice | ElevenLabs, Descript, Podcastle | Podcasts, voiceovers, audio content |
| Design | Canva, Figma AI, Adobe Express | Templates, presentations, social assets |
| Scheduling & management | Buffer, Hootsuite, Sprout Social, Later | Content calendars, cross-platform publishing |
Prompting: T-C-R-E-I Framework
Thoughtfully Create Really Excellent Inputs
| Element | Description |
|---|---|
| Task | What you want the AI to do. Includes Persona (e.g. speechwriter, marketing exec with 15 years experience) and Format (bullets, table, short sentences). |
| Context | Necessary details. E.g. ‘Give me five birthday gift ideas. Budget £30. Recipient: 29-year-old who loves winter sports, recently switched from snowboarding to skiing.‘ |
| References | Examples or past outputs to guide the AI. Paste in your brand guidelines, previous successful content, or competitor examples. |
| Evaluate | Did the output meet your needs? |
| Iterate | Refine prompt with more information or edits until you get what you need. |
AI Best Practices
| Consideration | Action |
|---|---|
| Human in the loop | AI complements human skills; requires human review. Use for support, not replacement. |
| Be responsible | Evaluate and verify output. Be conscious of bias, stereotypes, incorrect information (hallucinations). |
| Stay secure | Avoid entering confidential or personal data. Check company policies; understand how data is used and retained. |
| Disclose when required | Some regions and platforms require labelling AI-generated content. Check local regulations. |
| Feed your brand voice | Give AI your brand guidelines, tone examples, and past content so output is consistent with your identity. |
4. Ethics and Legal Responsibilities
Content creation is governed by regional legislation and ethical practices. Research what applies in your regions and your customers’ regions.
Ethical Digital Marketing Practices
| Practice | Description |
|---|---|
| Be truthful | Don’t misrepresent or mislead about products, services, or business. |
| Share the credit | Acknowledge origin of content (images, reviews, AI-generated work); seek permission where needed. |
| Label AI content | Disclose AI-generated content where required. Platform policies (Meta, Google, TikTok) increasingly require AI labels. |
| Make adverts obvious | Clearly label ads vs impartial reviews; especially when working with influencers (#ad, sponsored). |
| Be clear and audience-conscious | Avoid jargon; don’t target vulnerable audiences who may not grasp impact of complex purchases. |
| Be representative and inclusive | Reflect diversity—ages, body shapes, abilities, ethnicities, gender, parental status. |
Legal Concepts for Consideration
| Concept | Notes |
|---|---|
| GDPR | EU/UK data protection; applies if registered in EU/UK or have EU/UK customers. |
| Data protection and privacy | Collection, storage, use of data; email marketing requires permissions. First-party data strategies are now essential as third-party cookies are deprecated. |
| Discrimination laws | Accessibility for visually/hearing impaired, motor function limitations. |
| Brand and trademark | Mentioning other brands may require permission. |
| Intellectual property | Content, images, sounds have usage rights; seek authorisation when uncertain. AI-generated content copyright is still evolving—check jurisdiction. |
| Online advertising laws | Representation of offers; not causing offence. Varies by region. |
| AI-specific regulation | EU AI Act and other emerging frameworks may affect how AI-generated marketing content is disclosed and used. |
5. Creating a Content Calendar
What is a Content Calendar?
A structured timeline that organises content marketing: what to publish, when, and on which platform. Ensures consistency and efficiency; can boost sales.
Getting Started
| Step | Focus |
|---|---|
| Choose your tool | Notion, Trello, Asana, Google Sheets, or dedicated tools (Buffer, CoSchedule, Sprout Social). AI can help generate calendar drafts. |
| Remember your goals | E.g. +20% website visits → content that regularly drives traffic. |
| Know your audience | Segment; specify which group per post. When are they online? Which channels? |
| Remember your purpose | Entertain, inspire, educate, convince—match content and platforms. |
| Identify key moments | Holidays, festivals, seasonal events, industry events, product launches. |
| Create your content | Link posts, images, videos to the calendar. Stays organised; allows review before publish. Batch-create content where possible. |
| Analyse and iterate | Track data—posting frequency, content effectiveness, campaign impact on sales and traffic. |
